"Let us set aside our rational tools of inquiry and rely on our imagination to see ourselves through time. Imagine that a time machine dropped you into a middle age hovel at breakfast time. Have a bowl of gruel and consider how you should spend your day. You take up the universal chores of survival. You will spend your days as all your fathers through the “mist of time.” You either hunt or gather, or farm or fish, until you die an early and welcome death. 

Entrapped by ignorance, you cling to survival with primitive tools. Your energies are spent on seeking food and shelter. You can only know what you see around you. You live with fear: fear of warriors, neighbors, strangers, “gods,” and famine. If you need help there is no 911 to call. You could never have imagined an invisible force would someday transform such despair into abundance, security, and complexity of measureless scope. But it did! The powerful invisible force is the free market supported by family, Judeo-Christian ethics, along with the rule of law."
